Matt Stafford optimistic for Lions sans Calvin Johnson
  • NFL null null

"I think we're going to do it a little bit differently than we have in the past," Stafford told SiriusXM NFL Radio.

"Obviously we used to feature Calvin and everybody kind of got theirs after that. It's going to be tougher for defenses in a certain way that they don't know who we're going to. There's no guy to key in on. We're probably just going to spread the ball around a bunch, and a bunch of guy夜网论坛s will get a ton of catches and we'll be all right."

Stafford also mentioned Golden Tate and giving him more of a chance to shine. Tate will likely play a more prominent role in the offense along with former first-round pick Eric Ebron at tight end. The Lions finished 7-9 last year.

Johnson, 30, retired in March after eight seasons with Detroit.

Vikings will struggle to wake up from midseason nightmare
  • NFL

The Vikings went into Monday night's Week 8 game at Chicago needing to get a big, sweet rebound victory. Instead, much like Charlie Brown, they got a rock.

They fell to 5-2 after being treated to a brutal 20-10 upset loss to the now 2-6 Bears. Was Minnesota's perfect start before a momentum-stopping Week 6 bye a trick? It sure feels that way.

This second straight road loss played out much like what happened to the tune of 21-10 in Philadelphia last week, only minus the turnovers. Quarterback Sam Bradford took six sacks against the Eagles, and the Bears, who hadn't been scaring anyone with their injury-riddled defense, spooked him into five more sacks.

FANTASY: Week 9 waiver wire tips

We already told you that offensive line would be a big problem down the line after their Week 5 win vs. Houston. We also told you last week that Bradford isn't the one dragging their offense down.

Bradford (23 of 37, 228 yards passing, TD, zero INTs, 88.6 passer rating) was under siege all night. He had to be spectacular, since he still got no help from his running game. He was above average, and had no chance to be the better quarterback on the field.

The better QB was Jay Cutler, solid after returning from a right thumb injury (20 of 31, 252 yards, TD, zero INTs, 100.5 rating). But Cutler also had the benefit of facing little pressure from a usually deep, dominant Vikings pass rush and rookie running back Jordan Howard (26 carries[......]

How the Browns can still be a playoff team in 2019
  • NFL null

The Browns still have a chance to make the AFC playoffs.

That's not a joke, even though it might seem like one after the Patriots dumped what seemed to be yet another dose of reality on the 2019 offseason darlings in a 27-13 New England victory. Cleveland is 2-5 and three games back in a weak AFC North.

What would possess anybody to think this team is fit to stay in the AFC playoff hunt? Start with the schedule, focus 夜网论坛on the division, look at the stars and hope this is part of the maturation process for a talented, Baker Mayfield-led team team that is still learning to play together.

WATCH: Full Browns vs. Patriots highlights

Super Bowl runs do not happen overnight, but a playoff run can be cobbled together in half a season. Here is why we believe that is still possible for the Browns.

    Browns' schedule gets lighter.

There are no moral victories, but take a closer look at Cleveland’s losses. Tennessee is the worst team with a .500 record. The Rams, 49ers, Seahawks and Patriots have a combined winning percentage of .839. New England and San Francisco are the last two unbeaten teams in the NFL this season.

If the first half of the season proved anything, it's that the Browns are not quite ready for the Super Bowl conversation. Take solace in the fact that the 49ers, who dumped the Browns 31-7 on "Monday Night Football," w[......]

John Madden has good reason to avoid artificial crowd noise on NFL broadcasts, but will he get his wish?
  • NFL American Football

John Madden does not want to hear artificial crowd noise on NFL broadcasts in 2020 if games are played without fans in attendance. His reasoning is simple: access. Who would not want to hear more of what's said between players, coaches and officials on the field?

The answer, unfortunately, could be the people who ultimately have the power to decide whether piped-in crowd noise will blanket this previously unheard chatter.

Fred Gaudelli, the ex夜网论坛ecutive producer of NBC Sports' "Sunday Night Football," was recently interviewed by The Athletic on the subject of sports TV presentations without fans in the stands. He referenced his conversation with Madden, the Pro Football Hall of Famer whom he had asked for advice on whether to utilize artificial crowd noise on live game broadcasts.

"He said, 'When I first left the coaching profession and went to broadcasting, there was something about it that I just felt was missing and I couldn’t really put my finger on it,'" Gaudelli remembered. “He said, ‘Then I realized that I wasn’t hearing the sound that I had grown accustomed to hearing — as a player and as a coach. I never coached from the box, I coached from the field.’

"He said to me, ‘Fred, you’re going to hear things that even you have never heard, so I’d be really trying to figure out how to best capture those[......]

What channel is 49ers vs. Seahawks on today? Time, TV schedule for Week 8 NFL game
  • NFL Seahawks v 49ers 49ers Seahawks American Football

The stakes aren't quite as high as the last time San Francisco and Seattle met with an NFC West crown on the line, but their Week 8 matchup is still夜网论坛 important for both teams with playoff implications on the line.

At 4-3, the 49ers sits in last place of the competitive NFC West but are squarely in the playoff hunt, just one game back of wild card position. This season has been far from what 49ers faithful had hoped for thanks to a litany of injuries, but the team appears to have found a bit of a rhythm recording wins in back-to-back weeks with victories over the Rams and Patriots. San Francisco will be even more short-handed on offense this week after the news that wideout Deebo Samuel and running back Jeff Wilson will be unavailable for a couple of games.
