  • New Brewers manager Craig Counsell played in the majors for 16夜网论坛 years, scored the winning run in the 1997 World Series and was MVP of the 2001 NLCS. But the former infielder always will be remembered best for his unusual batting stance. For much of his career, the .255 career hitter held his bat high above his head. Like, really high. Ridicuously high. Here's a classic Counsell stance from when he played for Milwaukee in 2004:SPECTOR: Brewers made the right move in changing managers (Getty Images)Gar Ryness, better known as Batting Stance Guy, rates Counsell as having the second-best stance of recent decades. Only Kevin Youkilis ranks higher. In a 2010 book, Ryness describes the above Counsell stance as "absolutely spectacular." He adds: "Nobody (in baseball history) has reached higher with his bat than Counsell."Over the course of his long career, Counsell had more subdued but still-great stances. For instance, here is with the 2002 Diamondbacks:And this one was with the 1998 Marlins:He even got the Batting Stance Guy treatment. We don't know how good a manager Craig Counsell will be. Carlos Correa, Jed Lowrie and the dilemma of pitching in extra innings
  • The A’s found themselves in an undesirable situation on Thursday night. In the 10th inning, after Jose Altuve’s leadoff single, the Astros’ second baseman stole second base and moved to third on a bunt by Carlos Gomez, putting the go-ahead run 90 feet from home plate and able to score on an out. What’s more, Houston had Carlos Correa at the plate, and the 20-year-old shortstop already was 2 for 3 with a single, a walk and the homer that had given Houston a short-lived lead in the eighth inning. MORE: How does Mike Trout stack up against legends? | Jon Stewart's 10 best Mets mentionsThe old-school strategy in this situation would be to walk Correa and set up a potential inning-ending double play. A look at a run expectancy chart says the Astros would expect to score 0.88 runs out of the runner-on-third, one-out situation, but 1.13 runs from runners on the corners with one out. This is not fully relevant, however, because in extra innings, the goal is to maximize the chance of zero runs scoring, not to hedge against a big inning. The A’s decided to pitch to Correa, albeit very carefully. He popped up on a 3-0 pitch. So, the decision worked out. But was it the right decision?Correa had 11 previous plate appearances with third base occupied and fewer than two outs. He had two homers, two sacrifice flies, an RBI groundout, a groundout that didn’t score a run, a double play and four strikeouts. That’s a 45 percent rate, albeit in a small sample size, of getting the run[......]

NLCS 2015: Duda's three-run homer puts Mets ahead early in Game 4
  • CHICAGO — It’s never a good thing for the home team when the visiting pitcher steps to the plate before any of the home team’s batters get a turn. That’s especially a disastrous scenario when the home team is facing a win-or-play-golf scenario in a playoff game. On Wednesday, for the seventh time in eight playoff games — and the fourth time in this NLCS — the Cubs allowed their opponent to score in the first inning. MORE: Top NLC夜网论坛S photos And the Mets didn’t just push one run across the plate. They scored four times in the first, on a three-run homer by Lucas Duda — that brought home Curtis Granderson, who had singled, and Yoenis Cespedes, who had walked — and a solo shot by Travis d’Arnaud. And just like that, six batters into a game Chicago had to win to extend their season at least one more day, the Cubs were trailing by four.  Related News NLCS 2015: Best photos from the Cubs-Mets showdown The Mets put two more runners on in the inning, too, off Cubs starter Jason Hammel, but Mets rookie pitcher Steven Matz flew out to right to end the inning. The Cubs were already down three games to none in the best-of-seven series, so the scoreboard screaming 4-0 couldn’t have been very comforting as the game progressed.[......]
