Jimmy Garoppolo injury update: 49ers QB could miss time after ankle sprain

NFL 49ers Jets v 49ers Jets American Football

49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo might not play next weekend after injuring his right ankle Sunday against the Jets.

Garoppolo's high-ankle sprain kept him off the field in the second half of San Francisco's 31-13 victory, and coach Kyle Shanahan suggested it would also sideline him for the team's upcoming matchup with the Giants.

The 49ers have been ravaged by injuries of late, losing Nick Bosa, Solomon Thomas and Raheem Mostert on Sunday, all to knee issues. George Kittle (knee) was inactive for the game.

When Garoppolo tore his ACL two years ago, Nick Mullens was a most effective replacement. Mullens would fill in for Garoppolo against the Giants if needed.

Mullens threw for 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 2018. He was an undrafted rookie that season and has had time to learn Shanahan's offense on a deeper level since then.

Still, not having Garoppo

lo would be a blow to a 49ers group that relies on responsible, no-mistake offensive football to succeed. Garoppolo is 19-6 in his career as San Francisco's starting quarterback.
